Intrigued Traditions against the Cupping-Operation
Certain persons may say: “I have read some of the prophetic traditions which prevent cupping on days of Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and I have found that there is contradiction in them. Some of these traditions prefer cupping to be performed, and others prohibit doing it. Which Hadith is the right one? Rightness is whole in one and it is never pluralized!
In answer to this inquiry, we say that all the prophetic traditions are correct and strong and there is not any weak one among them at all. How could weakness sneak to them, and the Almighty Allah has witnessed to them in describing the Prophet in Al-Najm Surah “Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.” If contradictory is found between a certain tradition and the Noble Qur’an, and this denotes that there is doubt about its credibility and its fallacy is most clear, and the Messenger of Allah is exonerated from it, he didn’t speak it at all. There are many traditions that were forged and foisted in order to let people run in confusion and divert themselves from reality and fall preys in labyrinth. But no one can divert himself from rightness and reality except that one who has neglected his mind and does not give research its rightness which is attained thorough examination and comparison according to the Holy book “Qur’an”, logic and rightness. However he who uses his mind contemplating in the wonders of the universe, and thinking about his end in this life and his future in the hereafter.
Then, he attains the real faith, that changes the disbeliever to a savant after his insight is opened, and the wax of his ears vanishes, and the haze of his eyes disappears, and his spirit “heart” have been purified, and becomes perfect after he has loved and adored the people of perfection , and the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him) who is the Master of Perfection and high moralities , and he becomes by this divine trustworthy bond , which has no schism, able to put the proof against himself and against the others, depending on what he has known and understood from the Holy book “Qur’an” which becomes his reference, his support and his scale ( He who grasps it in practical life saves himself, and he who leaves it to other ones (books) perishes himself. Therefore, through the real faith alone man can distinguish between the exact tradition and the fabricated one. If the utterance is contradictory and different, that means the tradition is concocted by people, and not said by the prophet.
Allah said, “Certainly, you have different ideas. Turned aside there from is he who is turned aside.” Surah Adh-Dharyat (51:89)
Whereas the rightful utterance which is approved by the book of Allah is harmonious to a high level of harmony by the right logic and irrefutable evidence, so we find in it the uprightness and integrity of humanity. The Messenger, who has adhered himself to Allah in such a way that he has surpassed the whole world and all people in understanding the book of the Almighty Allah.
Almighty Allah says in Surah Ar-Ra’d (43): “And those disbelievers say:”You are not a Messenger”. “O. Mohammed Say: “It is Sufficient That Allah is the witness who is the right path “me or you”. and who has the knowledge of the holy book like me?, and who could understand it like me?. Such was his reply to the deniers of his messages and of his prophecy and the skeptical persons in his calling.
As well as, those who have sincerely followed him, getting true insight , will never be deceived by the ornament of utterance and its vanity.
The Almighty Allah Says : “O. Mohammed“ Say ;This is my way; I invite unto Allah with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me….” Surah Yusuf (12:108). As for those narrated traditions, which permit performing cupping on days of Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; and forbids its performance on days of Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, were weakened by Alhafez Ibn Hijr in Alfat’h (the Conquest) (12/256), and the late Imam Almajlisi showed their contradictions. We shall, for exclusive example, bring a pattern for you and leave the verdict to you, my dear brother reader. The first tradition: From Ibn Omar “may Allah be pleased with him” said, “Apply cupping treatment on Thursday…” (Ibn Majah /3487/). The second tradition: “Never be cupped on Thursday. He, who has been performed on, misfortune affects him …” Kanz Al-Ummal (workmen’s treasure) /Hindi/ (28158).
Today, there are so many contradictory traditions which tell you to be cupped on Tuesday, and others tell you not to be cupped on such a day. This contradiction denotes to their falseness and incredibility, and aims at confusion and liquefaction of the traditions of the favorite Prophet about cupping. All these are prejudiced intrigues whereas the rightful one is the one which the clear logic accepts it through the practical fact, and that which you find it aligns with the tradition of the Messenger of Allah, that does not confine cupping on days of Saturday, or Sunday, or Monday, or Tuesday…etc. but it defines the cupping time according to the lunar month, from his saying: “ Cupping is detested at the beginning of the crescent, and it is not hoped for benefit until the crescent decreases”.
It was told by Al-Hindi in his Kanz Al-Ummal (28113), by al-Ajlouni in Kashf Al-khafa’ (Uncovering of the concealment), and by Ibn Al-Jawzi in Tathkarat Almawdhooaat (Memo of subjects)/207/. This tradition was backed by another one in his saying:” The best days for you to be cupped are the seventeenth day, the nineteenth day, and the twenty-first day (of the lunar month)” Sunan Ibn Majah, Al-tib, No./3469/( Norms of Medicine). This honored tradition denotes the incredibility of the traditions which prohibit most days of the week: Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Tuesday … for a clear reason you yourself can discover it. Let us suppose that the seventeenth day of the lunar month comes on Friday and this means that the nineteenth day of it will surely be Sunday, and the twenty-first day of it will be Tuesday.
Let us also suppose that the seventeenth day comes on Thursday, then the nineteenth will be Saturday, and the twenty-first will be Monday… and so on.
The inconstancy of the days in relation with the dates of the lunar month because the lunar month is changing from month to another, and from year to year. This proves the abrogation of the traditions and of the claims that prohibit applying cupping on some days despite they are in a true time of performing cupping as they are in the spring time and after the decreasing of crescent…, and it confirms the futility of such traditions in a clear way. The Prophet (Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him) is innocent of such fabrications.

Sains dan Bekam
Some of the scientific aspects regarding the mode of action of Al-Hijamah (Cupping Therapy) as follows:
Dr. Naseer Saleh has written that; Al-Hijamah (cupping therapy) is the process to extract nitrate toxicosis in humans which occurs through enterohepatic metabolism of nitrates to ammonia, with nitrite being an intermediate. Nitrites oxidize the iron atoms in hemoglobin from ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron (Fe3+).
An Egyptian Physician Dr Sahbaa has written that Cupping exerts marked improvement on the clinical condition of patients especially visual analogue scale of pain, it significantly reduces the laboratory markers of disease activity and it modulates the immune cellular conditions particularly of innate immune response NK cell % and adaptive cellular immune response SIL-2R.
Dr. Katase from Osaka University maintained that Hijama (cupping) influences the composition of blood as it increases red and white blood cells and changes acidic blood into alkaline or neutral blood, resulting in its purification. It also cleanses the body of accumulated irritants that cause inflammation.
In the British Medical Journal Feb. 23, 1924 P; 352, Dr Robert J. Simons (French) has concluded that cupping is worthy of a place in modern therapeutics on the basis of following reasons:
After performing cupping, we observe that the coloring of the skin changes from clear pink to dark red, due to extravasation of blood from the capillaries into the flesh. This deep tissue blood falls into decay, the red globules break up and set free the antitoxins that impregnate them. Besides that, we observe extensive polynucleosis, which enables the patient to resist infectious pathogens. In surgery, cupping is used in the treatment of deep abscesses, boils, and anthrax after the incision. It draws up the matter, almost without pain, and allows rapid healing of the wound.
In the Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine. 2007. Volume 4 Number 1, it is stated: At a biological level, similar to acupressure and acupuncture, cupping therapy works by stimulating or activating (1) the immune system; (2) Enkephalin secretion; (3) neurotransmitter release; (4) vasoconstriction and vasodilatation, and (5) the gates for pain in the CNS which interpret the pain sensation (NIH Consensus Development Panel, 1998). Lastly, it is believed that stimulation of cupping points can lead to the pain gates being overwhelmed by the increasing frequency of impulses, ultimately leading to closure of the gates and hence reduction in pain (Oumeish, 1998; Cad well, 1998).
In the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, Vol. 36, No. 1, p 42, it has been written that the mechanism of wet-cupping is dominated by influences in neural, hematological, and immune system functioning.
In the neural system, the main effect is likely regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones such as serotonin (of platelet), dopamine, endorphin, CGRP (Calcitoni-Gene Related Peptide) and acetylcholine. Moreover, it seems that wet-cupping has an effect on the negative charge of neuronal cells.
In the hematological system, the main effect is likely via two pathways: (a) regulation of coagulation and anti-coagulation systems (e.g., decrease in the level of hematological element such as fibrinogen), and (b) decrease in the HCT (Hematocrit), followed by increase in the flow of blood and in the end organ oxygenation.
In the immune system, the main effect is likely via three pathways:
(a) Irritation of the immune system by producing local artificial inflammation, followed by activation of the complementary system and increase in the level of immune products such as interferon and TNF (Tumor Necrotizing Factor);
(b) Effect on the thymus;
(c) Control of traffic of lymph and an increase in the flow of lymph in lymph vessels.
Now let us revive the forgotten Sunnah of Our Beloved Prophet and get blessings of Allah in this world and Hereafter.

What Is Islamic Cupping
What is cupping (hijama)?
Cupping (hijama) is the best remedy recommended and used by the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam). The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…" [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]. He (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, "Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]. This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah.
'Hijama' in arabic is derived from 'hajm' which means 'sucking'. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum.
Cupping (hijama) is of three types:
Dry cupping (hijama) - This is the process of using a vacuum on different areas of the body in order to gather the blood in that area without incisions (small, light scratches using a razor).
Dry massage cupping (hijama) – This is similar to dry cupping (hijama) but olive oil is applied to the skin (before applying the cups) in order to allow easy movement of the cups.
70% of diseases, pains and ailments are due to the blood being unable to reach certain parts of the body. Dry cupping (hijama) and dry massaging cupping (hijama) allow the blood to reach these places.
Dry and massage cupping (hijama) may be self-administered in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Each cupping (hijama) box is accompanied by an instruction booklet. We have also provided further instructions on our 'How To Cup' page.
Dry and massage cupping (hijama) may be administered any time of the day, any day of the week or month. There are no restrictions.
Wet cupping (hijama) - This is the process of using a vacuum at different points on the body but with incisions in order to remove 'harmful' blood which lies just beneath the surface of the skin. (It is recommended that wet cupping (hijama) is only administered by a cupping therapist).
We will run cupping (hijama) courses for wet cupping (hijama) inshAllah. Please join our FREE newsletter and we will keep you updated inshAllah.
Wet cupping (hijama) may only be administered at certain times of the day and days of the week. Please see our 'Authentic Narrations' page for further details.
Is cupping (hijama) a cure for every disease?
Cupping (hijama) is a cure for every disease if performed in its correct time. The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Indeed in cupping (hijama) there is a cure." [Saheeh Muslim (5706)]. The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawud (3861)].
There are specific points on the body where the cups are applied for each ailment.
Is cupping (hijama) from the Sunnah?
Above are just some of the authentic narrations which show that cupping (hijama) is from the Sunnah of the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam). Please see our 'Authentic Narrations' page for more authentic narrations about cupping (hijama).
The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, s/he will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

Do not allow your blood to rage (boil) such that it kills you." [Reported by Hakim in his 'Mustadrak' and he authenticated it and Imam ad-Dhahabi agreed (4/212)].
In Cupping (Hijama) There Is A Cure And A blessing
Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Healing is in three things: in the incision of the cupper, in drinking honey, and in cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my Ummah (nation) from cauterization (branding with fire)." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5681), Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3491)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.
Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever wants to perform cupping (hijama) then let him search for 17th, 19th and 21st…" [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3486)].
Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. In it is a cure and a blessing. It improves the intellect and the memory. So cup yourselves with the blessing of Allaah on Thursday. Keep away from cupping (hijama) on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to be safe. Perform cupping (hijama) on Monday and Tuesday for it is the day that Allaah saved Ayoub from a trial. He was inflicted with the trial on Wednesday. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3487)].
Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then (let it be) on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with a trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

She replied, "If you really are a Prophet then Allaah will inform you of it and if you are not then I would save the people from you!" When the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) felt pain from it, he (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) performed cupping (hijama). Once he travelled while in Ihram and felt that pain and hence performed cupping (hijama). [Ahmed (1/305) the hadeeth is hasan (good chain with all the paths)].

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, "Cupping (hijama) under the chin is beneficial for pain in the teeth, face and throat, if it is performed in its proper time. It purifies the head and the jaws.
Cupping (hijama) on the top of the foot is a substitution for the puncturing of the Saphena, which is a large vein in the heel. It is beneficial for treating ulcers that occur on the thighs and calves, the interruption of menses and skin irritation on the testicles.
Cupping (hijama) at the bottom of the chest is beneficial for the treatment of sores, scabies and mange on the thighs. It helps against gout, hemorrhoids, elephantiasis and itchiness on the back." [Zaad al-Ma'aad, 4/58].
